Differential interference contrast (DIC) and polarization are advanced contrast methods in microscopy:

DIC (Differential Interference Contrast) is used to visualize fine height differences and structures in transparent, unstained samples. It produces three-dimensional images with a high level of detail - ideal for cell cultures, tissue samples or thin layers, for example.
Polarization is suitable for examining birefringent materials such as crystals, minerals, plastics or fibres. It is often used in material testing, geology or stress analysis.

Both methods improve contrast without having to stain the sample, making them ideal for sensitive or structure-critical applications.
